EPIPHANY PROCLAMATION: Traditionally on the feast of the Epiphany, the church announces the date of Easter and the
holy days that are reckoned from that time. In the year 2009,
we will celebrate EASTER on April 12. ASH WEDNESDAY falls on February 25, PENTECOST falls on May 31 and the FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT falls on November 29.

IT’S ABOUT THAT TIME OF YEAR when the weather can turn bad. We always err on the side of safety when the forecast is predicting wintry conditions so as not to put anyone at risk. Parishioners live all over the county on many types of roads. Sometimes the parking lot conditions here are not good. What happens in one part of the area may not be true for another. We try to keep crrent with our information line–call 213-7685 to get an update on your event. This number is also printed on the front of the bulletin under the picture of St. Francis.

BUS TO WASHINGTON: The Knights of Columbus are making plans to rent buses to the March for Life in Washington on January 22. They are currently collecting donations after Masses to help pay for them. Are you interested in going? The cost is $30 for an adult, $15 for a child which includes supper at a buffet on the way home. Catch the bus in the front of the church at 7:45 AM and arrive home later that night. Sign-up sheets are available in the church vestibule. There will be a special Mass at 7 AM that morning. Whether you are going to the March or not, please come to pray for pro-life intentions.

LITURGICAL MINISTERS: The schedules for February, March and April will be coming out soon. If you already know of dates you will not be available , please contact Becky at 886-1392 or at Rebecca.coburn@verizon.net.

COLLECTIONS: Starting today, in accordance with our new
procedures for security, the ushers will be taking up the second collection right after the first one.

2008 CONTRIBUTIONS must be in the office by today,
January 4, to be recorded on your 2008 tax statement. Anything coming in later will appear as a 2009 donation. The diocese now requires that we mail statements directly to you. Expect them by the end of January .

THE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL will meet on Monday, January 7, at 7 PM in the Conference Room near the parish offices. All members of the parish are welcome to attend .

FROM OUR LOCAL MISSION RECIPIENT (St. Joseph’s
Mission in Grundy, part of the Tazewell-Buchanan Cluster of
Catholic Parishes)....
To date (December 9) in 2008, St. Francis has contributed
$10,348.21 to St. Joseph’s. The ongoing support from St.
Francis continues to enable the Mission to build campus
ministries for the growing law school and school of pharmacy
in Buchanan County and to maintain its facilities. Thank you
and the parishioners for your continuing and generous support
of the work being done at St. Joseph’s.
Sincerely, Rev. Gaudencio G. Pugat SVD, Pastor

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Catholics are obligated by
their baptismal commitment to participate in the political
process of our country. We are called to build a culture of life,
to provide for the poorest and most vulnerable among us and
to enhance family life and educational opportunities for
children. Both US & Virginia lawmakers will soon be
considering legislation that will impact all of these areas. Here
are two ways you can make a difference:
1. Sign up for the Virginia Catholic Conference’s e-mail
advocacy network. Receive regular alerts on upcoming issues.
Your free membership in this network will enable you to
communicate directly with your local legislators. Alerts include
pre-drafted messages that you can send (as is or modified to
fit your own style) with a few mouse clicks. It’s effective
advocacy with very little time commitment. Sign up at
www.vacatholic.org by clicking on the “Join the Network” icon.
2. Participate in Catholic Advocacy Day on Monday,
January 26 at St. Peter’s Church (adjacent to Capitol Square
in Richmond) from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Issue briefings are
followed by constituent visits to legislator’s offices Registration
forms are found at www.vacatholic.org by clicking on the
Catholic Advocacy Day flyer or you can call at 804-225-8565.

LIFE TIPS FROM OUR RESPECT LIFE
MINISTRY: Abortion legal at any time for any
reason? IT IS. Are the medically vulnerable
sometimes told their lives are not worth living? THEY ARE. Isn’t
there SOMETHING YOU CAN DO to defend the
DEFENSELESS? THERE IS!! Join the VIRGINIA SOCIETY
FOR HUMAN LIFE (VSHL) @ 804-282-8745 or www.vshl.org.

BEHIND THE COLLAR: The decision to become a priest
requires many conversations. You need to be in prayerful
conversation with God, in conversations with your family and
friends and in conversation with the members of your church
community. The Diocesan Office of Vocations has developed
a new Internet resource to help this conversation take another
step forward. Go to www.behindthecollar.com to see and hear
conversations with seminarians and priests of the Diocese of
Richmond as they talk in a candid and informal setting bout
their experience of God’s call. Click the “Discuss” button and
hear men who ”wear the collar” talk about their call, what it’s
like to be in a seminary and family and friends reacted to this
decision. Go BEHIND THE COLLAR to hear more.

Eucharistic Adoration News
“O Lord, our God, a star led the Magi to your Son. May the
sound of your word and the light of you Spirit lead us today to
worship before him in Spirit and in truth, bringing to him the gifts
of our lives. Amen.”

chapel any time. If you are able to commit to an hour, these are
the times we most need adorers: Sunday 12 AM & 1 AM ,
Mondays at 4 AM, Fridays at 3 AM, 10 AM, Saturdays at 11
AM, 12 PM & 10 PM. Prayer partners are also needed on
Mondays at 2 PM, Tuesdays at 3 AM, , Wednesdays at 11 AM
and Saturdays at 9 AM, 11 Am & 12 PM. Leave a message for
Mary Thompson at 886-2262 if you can come for an hour.

ADORATION WHEN THE CHAPEL IS CLOSED: If you are
able to get in and want to make a visit, you are always
welcome. Our Lord is still there even though the Blessed
Sacrament is reposed. If the door is locked, you can use the
new keypad on the door. The code is the same.
